Description

The main goal of this project is the development of a full integrated and homogeneous methodological approach to deal with the economic and social impacts of transportation system in Spain, including both infrastructures and transportation activities, jointly with policy related actions. These alternative approaches share a common tool, to be performed in the project framework, which is a multiregional Input-Output Table that includes detailed desegregation of transport activities.

Aims

The general goal can be split into three specific work lines:

  • 1. Estimation of a new Multiregional Input-Output Table which includes alternative transport activities such us roads, rail ways, shipping, air, etc. This new table should solve the main problems pointed out in different theoretical, technical and applied papers identified along the related literature.
  • 2. Estimation of the economic and social impacts derived from the investment in new transportation infrastructures by way of two different approaches: regional incomes and spillovers effects, and economic valuation of induced changes in accessibility indices (including their effect on general transportation costs).
  • 3. Estimation of social and economic impact of transportation policies, analyzing the external costs structures of alternative transport modes in order to evaluate the effects of different pricing and fiscal policies and its dissemination across economic system.

Final outputs to be obtained from this research project include: a) the availability a new powerful tool such as a transportation specific Multiregional Input-Output Table, b) than can be used to test and develop alternative methodologies to analyze the transportation system in Spain, and which up to now could not be applied because of information shortages, and c) a well developed and homogeneous set of alternatives approaches to deal with transportation system analyses that are fully new or newly applied to the Spanish economy.
